Mise en Snap: The Virgin Suicides

05/11/2011

Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides is a gorgeously dark movie that I just had to feature and study. As you can see from the screens, and might expect from a Sofia Coppola movie, it’s very lonely and feminine. The main characters are gorgeous girls who are isolated both because of their beauty and because of the recent suicide of their youngest sister. The film follows their lives as learned from boys in their class by reading Cecelia’s, the youngest sister’s, diary.

Aren’t the mise-en-scenes dreamy?

Packaging Design: Sobrainie Cocktail Cigarettes

04/30/2011

Don’t you agree that the best cigarettes are simply beautiful to gaze at (and not to smoke)? These are my absolute favorite cigarettes both because of the design and because of the quality. In this ever-changing world quantity seems to become more important than quality and that’s sad.

Mew for Today: Pink, Blue and Cute All Over

04/05/2011

You can often get a nice scoop of inspiration and eye-candy window shopping at ebay and other cute shops online. One of my favorite past-times is window shopping both American and Japanese auction sites with friends looking for the cutest stuff. Shops on both auction and craft or indie sites, such as Refuse to be Usual and Bang Bang Crash, tend to have a low stock of items so you can be sure that everyone’s not wearing your outfit.

Fall in Love With the World

04/03/2011

I love falling in love with the world again and again and tumblr always seems to help make that happen. When feeling low or uninspired I take a stroll through my recents there and I’m feeling fine again (as directed by my best friend). Sometimes all we need is a little eye-candy you see.. and for you this is just the place to get it.

.. and yes I’m a little addicted to candy-colorful hair. Aren’t you?

Making Things and Sticking to Resolutions

03/07/2011

Have you been living a whimsical life? Turning your inspirations into new and wonderful creations? I’ve been making some things lately for our Etsy store and it relieves my stress so much! If you haven’t taken time out for crafting and diy lately now’s a great time to do it. Always improve your world. <3 I'm going to be making some new resolutions to follow. Things I know I can do if I just challenge myself to do them. Who says New Years Day is the only time we can create resolutions? 1. Take more photos and include many more photos/images in posts. 2. Start a few new features and maintain some old favorites. 3. Have more fun.
4. Create more.
5. Start journaling again.
6. Lose weight and get fit.
7. Create digital scrapbook pages by year for Colette.
8. Organize organize organize and do a major Spring Clean.

What are some resolutions you’d like to stick to?

We Call Them Chicago Weekends

02/17/2011

I live in a small city I like to call OZ. It’s cute, sweet and colorful with bright blue skies, yellow meadows and green grass. Living here is nice, you get small-city life but there’s not so much hustle bustle that you can’t get around easily. I love Indianapolis, I’ve tried to move several times and I keep coming back here to roost (the people here are rad).

One way we Indy folk like to have fun is to go to Chicago over the weekend. Our neighbor is a major city, has delicious deep dish pizza, and has an abundance of sky scrapers, shops, events and food to enjoy.

The pizza was delicious and quite different from my usual favorite. It was refreshing to try something new but, as you can imagine, very messy. This baby was not so much a hands-on pizza slice.

It was also here that Benjamin and I met and had pizza with Jamie of Japan L.A. and Stephie of Dollybeast — both were visiting Chicago and couldn’t stop raving about it. It surely is a special place and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Stay tuned for features on two of my favorite places in Chicago, Chinatown and Rotofugi.

Come and Soak Up The Eye-Candy

02/10/2011

I’m tired. I want to lay in the sun. If you experience a snowy and icy winter then you’ll understand.. It gets a little dreary.

To pick myself up I’ve decided to look at inspiring photos on tumblr, isn’t that site a bit addicting? Sometimes I start posting inspiring photos to the Miseducated tumblr and can’t stop! You’ll find a link below each photo to where they’re from.

Little Oven Bakery and the Magnificent Macarons

01/19/2011

Little Oven Bakery in New York City surprised me with a little package filled with French confections recently. I was really excited because not only was it a chance to photograph and eat one of my favorite things: macarons; but I also had a little case of Sofia Minis chilled just for such an occasion.

I must say they were all delicious. Even after being mailed they were perfectly crispy, chewy and delicious. I felt like I’d just ran away from the bakery with an abundance of sugary love.

I heard they’ve been recently adding new flavors to their lineup like chai tea and peanut butter and jelly. Yum! I can’t wait for my next tasting session.

Meet Goldiloks: Jacktress of All Trades

01/17/2011

Goldiloks and I met awhile ago through this website. She raved about whimsy, color and all of the things we love here at Miseducated and we instantly became pals.

She’s been creating art since she can imagine and has been making her career revolve around it. She’s a prime example of why you have to keep doing what you believe in. Your dreams just may come true!
How long have you been painting?
Painting, all my life but I guess to narrow it down, around 2004 I started taking it seriously. Back then I was more into street art but slowly worked my way into using different mediums.

What is your favorite piece or set you’ve made?
Hamburger Playland. It’s a Junkyard Window piece I created for my daughter… I love it becuz… I dont know.. It represents everything I think a kid’s imagination should be filled with…. lots of pretty colors, whimsical characters and smiling things.

What inspires you most?
Pretty things. Clever things. Anything that make me feel good. If I see something that makes me smile, or want to be around it, It’s usually something that inspires me. Makes me want to create. which is a huge cycle, becuz of course, once you create something, it inspires you to produce more.

If you were having the worst writer’s block ever what is a sure fire way to help you out of it? What works for you?
HA! When I figure this one out, I’ll let ya know! No, really.. when I get into a blank space, I usually fill it with inspirational stuff like recipes I want to try, Japanese fashion magazine clippings, love notes my husband writes me, or pretty pictures. New ideas always come when I fill my little space with new stuff.

JUST DO IT! And DO YOU! No one ever succeeded in life by just WANTING to be successful.

How would you encourage other artists staring out to get online, in galleries, in craft shows?
JUST DO IT! And DO YOU! No one ever succeeded in life by just WANTING to be successful. Branch out, find people in your niche and dont be shy!! Introduce yourself becuz you never know, that person could be the person to open doors for you, or vice versa. Its all about networking, working towards a goal, but most importantly… DOING YOU.

Are you miseducated and why?
I believe so! I’ve never been the type to be put in a box, and never will. I’m a creative soul, love anything cute and whimsical….so I guess that makes me miseducated!

Goldiloks also made us these collages~
